Finasteride was initially developed by the drug company Merck & Co and is one of the most well-known and used to treat male pattern hair loss in men. Finasteride is a prescription drug that is available on the NHS. It is sold under the brand name Propecia. Finasteride works by blocking the conversion of testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is the hormone responsible for hair loss in men. By blocking DHT, finasteride prevents the production of the hormone, which stops hair growth. However, the mechanism of action of finasteride differs depending on which drug is used and how long it takes to work. The mechanism of action for finasteride is to prevent the conversion of testosterone to DHT, which is responsible for the miniaturisation of the hair follicles. As a result, the hairs that have been lost will eventually grow back in the new areas on the scalp. Finasteride is available in 5mg tablets and is available in 1mg, 1mg, 1mg, and 2mg tablets as well. The dosage of finasteride is based on your medical history, hair loss type, and overall response to treatment.
Finasteride works by inhibiting the enzyme 5-alpha reductase. This enzyme is responsible for converting testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) which is the hormone responsible for the miniaturisation of hair follicles. Finasteride blocks this conversion of testosterone to DHT which prevents the hair follicles from shrinking and eventually stops the hair growth. This process is repeated every 3-4 months. Finasteride is prescribed to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) in men and to treat the symptoms of enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia or BPH). Finasteride also helps to reduce the risk of prostate cancer and may prevent the recurrence of the prostate gland. As a result, a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor may be prescribed to treat BPH and hair loss.
Finasteride starts working gradually over a period of 2-3 months. As a result, you will notice an increase in hair growth and the number of hairs on your scalp. If you are using finasteride for 3 months or more, you may experience some improvement in your hair loss.
You will begin taking finasteride 1mg tablets as soon as you feel that you are ready to start the treatment. You can take finasteride as your daily dose. The recommended starting dose is 1mg per day. If you are taking finasteride for 3 months or more, the starting dose of finasteride is usually 1mg daily.
If you forget to take finasteride, it is important to take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. If you are already on a daily dose of 1mg, skip the missed dose and continue your regular dosing schedule. Do not take 2mg or higher doses.
If you take too much finasteride, you may experience an allergic reaction. If this happens, stop taking finasteride and contact your doctor. Do not take more finasteride than prescribed.
